lauprellim This project has a lot of musically interesting aspects. I especially like the breadth of Edwin's experimentation -- having the plant both modify his sound and trigger samples.

about

In this work i've tried to answer a question that i did during my master's degree studies in music and new technology: Is possible to do a Live Electronics, instead with a person, with a plant?

So in this four tracks i've developed a system where i play electric guitar and the plant manipulates, in real time, my sound and generates by self some soundscapes. All the generated sounds was then passed through to the plant leaves as sound vibrations with a speaker, to do in this way a feedback system.

(In this recording the plant was an Aspidistra, one of the many plants that adorn my parents' home)

/// SOME NOTES ABOUT THE TRACKS ///

[Preludio]
Here i play only my guitar, with the intention to let perceive to the listener the timbre of my instrument. It is also a sort of quote of my past years of study in classical guitar. It is an original composition inspired by some Johann Kaspar Mertz Preludes.

[Prima Scena]
Here the plant manages and manipulates all the sound you'll hear, my guitar comes into this soundscape manipulated in real time by plant. The plant modify 18 parameters of my sound, like some filters, delays, bit reducers, wave shapers and reverbs. At the end, there is a bridge from my guitar slightly processed by the plant to link this track to the next one.

[Seconda Scena]
In this track i used a sample track where there are some far sounds of urban night traffic and two separate thunders from a rainstorm that followed by rain. Before the first thunder, plant plays every drops of water you'll hear and manipulate in different way each one, after first thunder the plant plays some resonators stuff generating some stereo panning voices where my guitar answers it in counterpoint, after second thunder there is a second bridge of my guitar pitched modified by plant to link this track to the last one.

[Terza Scena]
The track begins with a plant solo. The plant controls two instruments which manipulates various parameters, like vibrato and panning in addition to the dynamics. Then i play along with these produced sounds using swelling techniques to enrich the timbre and generate an unique instrument with my and plant sounds.
